Carpool services for ride‐sharing platforms: Price and welfare implications
نویسندگان
چکیده
There has been rapid growth in on-demand ride-hailing platforms that serve as an intermediary to match individual service providers (drivers) with consumer demand (riders). Several major players of this market have introduced carpool services allow passengers heading toward the same direction share a ride at discounted fare. In article, we develop analytical model study pricing issues ride-sharing presence services, and their economical social implications. We show should be provided when its quality and/or pooling efficiency is high. When platform finds it optimal offer option, achieves larger coverage riders are able enjoy more affordable rides without compromising on quality. Our analysis reveals provision benefits general, but may hurt drivers.

Spatio-Temporal Pricing for Ridesharing Platforms
Ridesharing platforms match drivers and riders to trips, using dynamic prices to balance supply and demand. A challenge is to set prices that are appropriately smooth in space and time, in the sense that drivers will choose to accept their dispatched trips, rather than drive to another area or wait for higher prices or a better trip. We introduce the Spatio-Temporal Pricing (STP) mechanism. The...
متن کاملWelfare Implications of Competing Two-Sided Platforms
We study the welfare implications of two-sided (decentralized) markets involving multiple intermediaries between buyers and sellers. For the analysis, we employ a stylized model where the intermediary sets the quantities of ad slots to purchase and sell, and the prices are a consequence of a Cournot model. The mathematics associated with the model is generic enough that it carries forward to ot...
متن کاملMacroeconomic implications of relative price distortions: Seigniorage, output and welfare∗
We compare macroeconomic models of sticky-prices (Calvo and Costsof-adjustment) with flexible price models in terms of optimal seigniorage. This sheds light on the importance of relative price distortions. Sticky-price models with no price dispersion terms have unattractive implications, we argue, when it comes to the derivation of optimal policies. We provide examples where they may imply very...
متن کاملRice Price Stabilization in Madagascar: Price and Welfare Implications of Variable Tariffs
Given the large share of major staples in the budgets of the poor, governments in many developing countries intervene in food markets to limit variation in the prices of staple foods. This paper examines the recent experience of Madagascar in stabilizing prices through international trade and the implications of adjustments in tariff rates. Using a partial equilibrium model, we quantify the ove...
متن کاملMoney, price dispersion and welfare
We introduce heterogeneous preferences into a tractablemodel ofmonetary search to generate price dispersion, and then examine the effects of money growth on price dispersion and welfare. With buyers’ search intensity fixed, we find that money growth increases the range of (real) prices and lowers welfare as agents shift more of their consumption to less desirable goods. When buyers’search intens...
